After the Central Railways completed the dismantling of Carnac Bridge, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday, November 20, said that a newly reconstructed bridge will be completed within 19 months from the day of final demolition.

The estimated cost of the bridge is around INR 49 crores and it is expected to be completed by June 2024. The bridge will ease traffic congestion in South Mumbai, said civic officials.

BMC officials have stated that they have set a target to complete it before March-April 2023. In order to do so, the civic body has sped up the reconstruction process of the new bridge at Carnac Bunder.

It is pertinent to note that the work order for the new bridge was issued in October, and construction and fabrication works have begun at a workshop in Ambala.

Official further explained that construction of the piers on which the newly reconstructed structure will be laid has begun. After this work, the girders will be brought to the site by the end of January and assembling at the site will be completed in two months. Whereas the finishing work after the girders are launched would take one more month.

According to officials, the first girder of the bridge will be launched by May 2023 and the second girder in October 2023 (depending on the availability of a railway block).

Construction of approaches on the east side will be required four months after launching the girders, while on the west side it will be done before launching of the first girder, official added.
