The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to extend the underground water storage tanks situated at Pramod Mahajan Udyan in Dadar and St. Xavier's ground in Parel. They were built at the cost of INR 130 crores, and this extension will cost them an additional INR 67 crores.

On Tuesday, October 19, the civic body had floated tenders to extend the underground tanks for INR 33 crores in Dadar and INR 34 crores at Parel. The extension of the underground water storage tanks is done to prevent flooding in the low-lying Hindmata area.

The tanks will be able to store the rainwater for four hours during heavy rains, stated BMC officials. The Pramod Mahajan Udyan tank can store 60,000 cubic meters of water, while the one on St. Xavier's ground can store 40,000 cubic meters of water.

The activists fear that the open spaces can be lost forever. Activist Zoru Bathena said that if the BMC aims to make holding tanks, they can do it below or on the side of the flood-prone road. He added that it would be self-defeating if the civic body digs the natural ground, which allows the rainwater to drain away and replace it with cement.

Previously, BJP had alleged a scam in the underground water storage tank plan as the civic administration had awarded the work to contractors without tenders.
