The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated bids worth ₹16.88 crores for repairing and reconstructing 14 bridges in western suburbs. The bridges are said to be located in Malad, Goregaon and Andheri.

The civic bridges department is looking to repair and reconstruct the vehicular and pedestrian bridges due to the structural defects identified during a recent audit.

In an audit done by Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), they found that these 14 bridges are vulnerable. They undertook the audit following the collapse of the Himalaya Bridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai in March 2019, said the civic body officials.

Overall, 50 small bridges are taken up for the reconstruction and repair work in phases. They will be doing similar works for the Bandra skywalk in the coming days, said an official from BMC's bridges department. Six of the 14 bridges will have to undergo major repairs, while another eight of them will be demolished and rebuilt.

Out of the 14 bridges, five of them are vehicular bridges which include Malwani bridge (Malad), Hindustan Nallah Bridge (Charkop Road in Kandivli), the bridge that connects Lokhandwala and Laxmi Nagar (Andheri West) and the one crossing Mithi River on Andheri-Kurla Road.

BMC's document stated that they would regulate vehicular traffic with the help of traffic police. Meanwhile, the demolition work for a part of the Bandra skywalk is likely to start after Diwali.
