Work on assembling Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) components for the twin tunnels under Phase 3-B of the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project is progressing rapidly at the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari site.
The TBM assembly is being carried out in the shaft area as part of preparations for underground tunnelling work. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar conducted a surprise inspection of the ongoing works and reviewed the progress.
According to officials, the assembly of the first TBM is expected to be completed by the second week of June. Work on the second TBM is also underway simultaneously at a fast pace.
Once the first machine is fully installed, a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) will be conducted to evaluate its mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control and safety systems. Only after successful completion of all tests as per prescribed standards will actual tunnel excavation begin.
The project involves construction of twin underground tunnels between Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon and Khindipada in Mulund. Each tunnel will be 4.70 km long, with a diameter of 14.20 metres, while sections passing through the Sanjay Gandhi National Park area will have a reduced diameter of 13 metres.
Authorities have set a target to commence excavation as per schedule and complete tunnelling work by October 2028. The overall project is expected to be completed by December 2028, officials said.
The Municipal Corporation stated that efforts are being made to ensure timely execution of one of Mumbai’s most significant infrastructure projects aimed at improving east-west connectivity.
