The deadline to open the Hancock bridge has been extended several times. However, according to latest reports it has come to light that two lanes of bridge will open on June 15.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official stated that the construction work of approach road for the two lanes is almost completed, therefore plans are on to open both in June 14 or 15.

Moreover, the work of Carnac Bridge depends on Hancock Bridge, which has been under construction for two years after the first deadline.

Meanwhile, local residents are not happy with the inauguration of only two lanes of one of the main east-west connectivity of south Mumbai.

Activists mentioned that opening of just two lanes of proposed four lane bridge raised the question on the functioning of BMC

For those unversed, the 148-year-old British-era structure was demolished in 2016 after being declared dilapidated. The bridge was initially built in 1879 and then underwent reconstruction in 1923. It's located between the Sandhurst Road and Byculla.

The first girder for the Hancock Bridge was launched in July 2020. In January 2021, it was opened for pedestrian movement only. After that in the first week of June 2021, work for launching the second girder was also completed.

Earlier, the construction work of the bridge was stalled for almost two years, as the contractor appointed by the BMC was blacklisted. Fresh tenders were then floated, and the contract was awarded in February 2018. The work was supposed to be completed within a year.
