Coronavirus pandemic and the following lockdown has affected several projects across the city of Mumbai. As per reports, work on Mumbai's Metro 2A and Metro 7 has suffered due to the lockdown and the lack of manpower, and the same has been postponed for several months now.

Metro authorities were expecting the first coach to be ready by early this year at the Charkop Depot, however, the same was postponed due to delay in the import of spare parts required for the same. Due to which, the completion of the construction work is being delayed and there are signs both the corridors are expecting the operations to begin a few months later than scheduled.

As per last year's target set by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Metro-2A which runs from Dahisar to DN Nagar, and Metro-7 which runs from Dahisar East to Andheri East, was expected to be operational by December 2020. The project came to a standstill during the lockdown period when migrant workers left for their hometowns. Following this, MMRDA had later announced that both the routes would be operational in May 2021.

According to this, the first metro train would have arrived by the end of December and will be tested on January 14, 2021.

Currently, MMRDA has awarded the contract for construction of three lanes to Bangalore-based Bharat Earth Movers Limited, and an important factor in the construction of this is a section which has to be imported from Japan. However, the same is being delayed due to the lockdown.

The coach of the first metro train is now expected to arrive in early March, and post this official will revise the time required for testing and other technical issues. Currently, it is understood that both the metro lines will be delayed by at least two months than scheduled.

Data reveals that a total of 504 Metro coaches have been awarded to Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, and each metro train will have 6 coaches. As per schedule, a total of 10 trains will arrive in the next 4 months. Initially, five Metro trains will run on both the routes with a frequency of 20 to 25 minutes each, post which, two metro trains will be added every month. Mumbai is soon expected to have a metro network of about 337 km running on a total of 14 lanes.
