Under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, the Mumbai Board of MHADA has constructed five buildings and 1690 houses will be provided in these buildings for the eligible Dharavi residents. Out of these 358 houses have already been transferred to the Dharavi Rehabilitation Project (DRP). Now the remaining 1332 houses will be transferred soon. However, the board will soon make a demand to the DRP that the INR 650 crore spent on the construction of these houses should be paid earlier. A letter will be sent to DRP for that.

Dharavi was divided into five sectors

Dharavi was divided into five sectors to clear the stalled Dharavi redevelopment project and the redevelopment of Sector 5 was entrusted to MHADA. Accordingly, the Board undertook redevelopment of its own 7.11 hectare site at Shatabdi Nagar in Sector 5 in the first phase. Construction of five buildings started in some of these areas.

358 houses in Building No. 1 was handed over to Dharavikars

After completing the work of 358 houses in Building No. 1, these houses have already been handed over to the eligible Dharavikars. Now building number 2 and 3 have been completed recently and these buildings consist of 672 houses. Importantly, these buildings received the occupancy certificate two days ago. Meanwhile, building number 5 is currently under construction and this building includes approximately 650 houses. The work of these houses is likely to be completed in the next six months.

Meanwhile, within a few years after the board started redevelopment, in 2018, the state government decided to redevelop Dharavi not sector by sector but collectively. Therefore, the redevelopment of Sector 5 from MHADA was withdrawn. But this time it was also decided to complete the buildings under construction and transfer them to DRP. Importantly, DRP had agreed to pay the expenses incurred for the construction of these buildings to MHADA.

At the same time, DRP will take over the remaining land of 7.11 hectares. DRP will give 25 percent of the ready reckoner amount to MHADA for this space. According to this decision, a demand will be made to the DRP to pay the estimated cost of Rs. 650 crore. He also said that a letter will be sent to DRP soon. Meanwhile, after receiving this amount, the Mumbai Board of MHADA has taken the role of classifying the remaining 1332 houses to DRP.
