The long-awaited Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link project is expected to open on May 1. The 13-kilometre stretch will reduce traffic congestion and cut travel time between the two cities by at least 30 minutes.
The project is located near Lonavla and is close to completion. Officials said the work is about 98% complete. As per reports, there is a firm target to open the road on May 1, which is observed as Maharashtra Day.
As per a report by TOI, Maharashtra chief secretary Rajesh Aggarwal visited the project site on Sunday. He chaired a review meeting and directed officials to finish the work within the deadline.
The missing link starts at Khopoli and ends near the Sinhgad Institute in Pune. The project includes two eight-lane viaducts. One is 790 metres long, and the other is 650 metres long. It also has two eight-lane tunnels measuring 1.75 kilometres and 8.92 kilometres.
तसेच लोणावळा… https://t.co/jLaXF1zT30 pic.twitter.com/csco2i9Qe0

In the Lonavla–Khandala section, there will be an 8.9-kilometre tunnel. This tunnel comes after a 640-metre-long cable-stayed bridge. The bridge stands about 100 metres above Tiger Valley. Parts of the project run as deep as 170 feet below ground level. Some of these sections pass below Lonavla Lake.
At present, the expressway covers about 19 kilometres between Khopoli and the Sinhgad Institute. A large part of this route passes through the ghat. Due to the incomplete link, vehicles are forced to use a shared stretch of the expressway and the old Mumbai–Bengaluru highway, also known as NH-4. In this section, six lanes of the expressway and four lanes of the highway merge into just six lanes.
