Fifty percent of the work on both the tunnels on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been completed. One of these tunnels will be 1.75 km long and the other 8.93 km long.

In terms of length, both these tunnels are longer than any other tunnel in India, but also in terms of width they will surpass all the tunnels in the world. Both the 23 meter wide tunnels will be the longest tunnels not only in India but also in the world. It will have four lanes.

According to the sources, however, the deadline for the work of these tunnels is constantly increasing. Their work was first disrupted due to the lockdown, after which a deadline of March 2024 was set. Now, it is estimated that the work of both these tunnels will be completed in January 2025.

Will save half an hour

Both these tunnels will pass under the lake in Lonavala. After their construction, the distance of Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be reduced by six kilometers. The distance between Khopoli and Sinhgad Institute on the expressway will be reduced from 19 km to 13.3 km. Therefore, about half an hour will be saved in the Mumbai-Pune journey.

Relief from Traffic

A cable-stayed bridge is being constructed to connect the tunnel to the expressway. Its giant pillars are almost complete.  The old Mumbai-Pune highway and the expressway run alongside two and four lanes. People will get relief from this. Along with this, there have been many accidents due to landslides in this area, there will be relief from that crisis as well.
