The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put forth an ambitious plan for Mumbai’s roads as it looks to replace traffic signals with single or unitary signage poles. These poles will be installed over a period of 3 years and will offer additional features to keep the motorists better informed.

To start with, unitary poles will have public address systems that can allow authorities to pass down emergency messages, including when there are diversions to traffic. Additionally, these will also offer brighter and bigger traffic lights, it is said.

Surveillance will be ramped up significantly using the unitary pole design, while the BMC will install CCTV cameras to monitor traffic in addition to red-light violation cameras to spot traffic violations in real-time.

Some of these traffic poles will consist of emergency buttons to divert traffic when there’s been an accident on the path. This will help motorists take diversions at the right time and consequently save time.

These new traffic poles will also include Wi-Fi sensors which will be instrumental in realizing Mumbai’s goal of becoming a smart city. Lastly, officials said that environmental sensors will be built into these poles to give an accurate reading of the air quality as well as the temperature and humidity.

The BMC has reportedly appointed a consultant to study the proposal at a cost of ₹2.7 crores whereas each unitary pole will cost ₹4.5 lakh taking the overall cost of the project to ₹93 crores. Officials have set a deadline of 6 months to finish all the formalities while they’re expecting to have these new signage poles ready within the next three years. The BMC is expecting to install nearly 2,000 unitary poles as part of this plan.
