The Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in Mumbai, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving east–west connectivity, has come under criticism due to serious safety concerns at its construction sites.
During a meeting of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), corporator Priti Satam highlighted multiple lapses, including the absence of proper barricades around heavy structures, scattered construction debris, open water-filled pits, lack of traffic management, and inadequate dust-control measures.
These shortcomings not only increase the risk of accidents but also pose public health threats, as stagnant water can lead to mosquito-borne diseases like Dengue and Malaria. In response, the BMC stated that it has already fined the contractor INR 3 crore and assured that corrective actions will be taken.
Although the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Goregaon and Mulund, the current negligence in safety practices raises concerns that must be urgently addressed to protect both workers and the public.
