Mumbai to Build 14 New Bridges in 4 Years: BMC's Plan to Ease Traffic

As per the latest civic audit, 41 bridges out of 444 in Mumbai need to be demolished and reconstructed. The civic body has undertaken reconstruction of 14 major structural repairs and minor repairs for 16 bridges. List of Bridges under construction:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is prioritising to improve the traffic system in Mumbai by building new bridges across the city.

As per the latest civic audit, 41 bridges out of 444 in Mumbai need to be demolished and reconstructed.

The civic body has undertaken reconstruction of 14 major structural repairs and minor repairs for 16 bridges.

According to reports, between March 2023 and December 2027, 14 new bridges will be available for Mumbaikars to commute. At the same time, the BMC is carrying out major structural changes in 9 major bridges, while repair work is being carried out in 16 bridges. All these bridges will soon be available for Mumbaikars.

In the previous budget of BMC, a provision of INR 1,370 crores was made for the bridge. At the same time, this year it has been increased by 700 crores.

A provision of INR 2,100 crore has been made for 2023-24 in this regard. Work to open six bridges for vehicular traffic by December 2023 is also underway.

Bridges that are under construction

  • It is pertinent to note that in this year's budget, INR 2100 crore has been earmarked for the bridge.
  • 95 per cent of the Teli Gali Bridge in Andheri (East) has been completed and it will be opened for vehicular traffic in March 2023, while the ones at Vikhroli and Vidyavihar are finally expected to be ready by May and Sept 2023, respectively.
  • The work of Gokhale Bridge connecting Andheri East and West is expected to be completed in September this year. Meanwhile, only 60% work is completed for Delisle bridge despite shutting it down. However, it will only open by October.
  • Also, 50 per cent of Vidya Vihar and Vikhroli railway station flyovers have been completed. It is planned to launch in May and September respectively.
  • The work on the flyover extending from Ram Mandir Road to Relief Road near Mrinaltai Gore flyover will be completed by December 2023.
  • 20 percent of the flyover being constructed at Mithi Chowki Junction on Link Road in Malad has been completed and is expected to be completed by October 2023.
  • 10 percent of the bridge connecting E Moses Road to Sat Rasta Junction has been completed. BMC has claimed that this project will be completed by March 2024.
  • After the completion of the bridge work at SV Road Kora Center, the work of the bridge on the Western Expressway is in progress. Its work is expected to be completed by November 2024.
  • Also from E Moses Road to Dr. Annie bridge will be built over the canal adjacent to Nehru Science Center up to Annie Besant Road and an underpass will be constructed to connect Nehru Planetarium and Nehru Center. Its work will be completed by November 2025.


Elevated road will be constructed

An elevated road will be constructed between Bhakti Park Complex and Jijamata Chowk on both sides of the Eastern Freeway. Its work will also be completed in November 2025.

The cable stayed bridge near Mahalakshmi railway station will run from Seven road to S bridge junction, extending west to Haji Ali junction. The bridge is expected to be completed by May 2026.

A bridge will be constructed from Juhu Versova Link Road to CD Barfiwala Road at JVPD Junction in Andheri West. The bridge is expected to be completed by October 2027. The bridge will be constructed near Bhagat Singh Nagar on the gulf between Andheri West and Goregaon border, which will be ready by December 2027.

Also, a bridge will be constructed to connect Western Expressway with Senapati Bapat Marg.

The elevated road between Dahisar and Bhayandar, Tilak Bridge at Dadar, Ray Road Railway Bridge and Byculla East Bridge are to be reconstructed.
