Swimming enthusiasts in Mumbai have a lot to be excited for as the Urban Development Department has decided to set up 7 new swimming pools in the city. These pools will be located in Worli, Andheri (East and West), Malad (West), Goregaon, Dahisar, as well as Govandi.

The Urban Development Department has also proposed to replace a planned recreation ground with a swimming pool at Breach Candy. This is part of the Development Plan-2034 (DP-2034) with the authorities now certifying maps detailing the land, which will also give us an idea of the location of these new aquatic centres.

However, there are nearly 2,000 proposals that are still pending. This is despite a few plans being sanctioned in May 2018 and September 2019 respectively. So it seems like the work is not fully done and this may take some while yet.

On the bright side, DP-2034 has taken less time to be finalized compared to the state’s previous development plans. Architect Vilas Nagalkar added “Maybe we should be thankful that it has taken lesser time as compared to the 1991 DP, which started in 1983 and was finalized in 1994. The DP-2034 has only taken six years. We hope the government will finalise the rest soon.”

Citizens of Mumbai will now have more access to public pools, while kids will also get a chance to learn the activity for the first time. Not including the new pools proposed as part of DP-2034, Mumbai currently has only 10 public swimming pools.
