On Friday, December 18, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) decided to sanction the redevelopment of buildings in four housing societies in the city.

The proposal for the buildings was earlier halted in an alleged bureaucratic red tape and political interference for more than five years. In a major relief to the residents of Navi Mumbai, the decision has now given hopes to at least four lakh people residing in 3,500 dangerous buildings across the area.

Moreover, NMMC has formed an identification committee for the purpose of scrutinizing redevelopment proposals of menacing and dilapidated buildings. The committee, spearheaded by municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar, includes Cidco chief planner, Cidco chief engineer, superintending engineer PWD, Thane, Joint director – town planning, Konkan Division and NMMC chief engineer.

On the other hand, the civic body of Navi Mumbai had earlier decided to have its own medical college in the city. Moreover, it has constituted a committee to chalk out the project. The NMMC spends more than ₹100 crores every year on the health department. As of now, it has a 300-bed hospital at Vashi, two mother and child hospitals in Airoli and Nerul and urban health posts in each ward.

However, as a result of a few medical professionals in the area, the NMMC is unable to provide super speciality care at its hospitals. This led to Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar deciding on the medical college to help the civic hospitals get the required manpower for its patients. This is further touted to increase the capacity of the hospitals in the area.
