In order to reclaim the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway from encroachments, the civic authority in Maharashtra's Palghar district has successfully demolished over 50 illegal structures. This step follows the recent heavy rains that brought significant traffic congestion to the vital highway.

The enforcement effort primarily targeted dhabas and permanent buildings that had encroached upon the highway's land. The demolition operation was led by senior civic officials and police personnel. It aimed to restore the route's original state by eliminating unauthorised construction.

Earlier, it was reported that the illicit land filling had generated a blame game between revenue and civic officials. In a letter dated May 9, the VVCMC reported illegal filling of land at Sasunavghar, Survey No. 117, to the Vasai Taluka Tahsildar. Allegedly, the revenue officer ignored their request for the tahsildar to take action against persons guilty of illegal land filling.

The Palghar district collector's (DC), on the other hand, said that it was the VVCMC's responsibility to put a halt to illegal activity in the region. The VVCMC, the municipal planning agency, is responsible for preventing illegal land filling. It took four days for officials to build a temporary drain amidst the 40-foot-high debris scattered behind Kinara Dhaba.

Recently, district collector Govind Bodke convened an emergency meeting regarding the matter. The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has conducted a comprehensive audit of the numerous encroachments and remains committed to their complete removal.
