More than 50 per cent of the work on the new bridge between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai has been completed, a latest report stated. The upcoming bridge, commonly known as Third Vashi Creek Bridge, will feature two additional arms.
It is a part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)’s ambitious plan's objective to decongest traffic in the city. Additionally, it aims to address the growing transportation needs between the two cities.
For those unversed, the project began in October 2020.
It will expand the total number of traffic lanes to twelve. This development is expected to significantly ease the burden on the existing bridge connections.
The construction of the bridge, also known as Thane Creek Bridge 3, is being carried out by the MSRDC in two phases.
TCB 1 and TCB 2 have been serving as the primary links between the cities. TCB 1 (built in 1973) is currently closed, leaving TCB 2 (built in 1997) as the sole operational bridge with three lanes on each side.
With TCB 3 scheduled to be completed in August 2024, commuters can anticipate a substantial improvement in connectivity and travel experience. The expansion of lanes from 6 to 12 will enable smoother traffic flow. Each of the bridges forming TCB 3 will stretch 1.8 kilometres in length.
The project has reached a significant milestone with the completion of the substructure and foundation. However, there are still essential tasks to be undertaken to finalise the bridge's construction. The remaining work includes the installation of roll posts, the construction of ramps, the expansion of connecting roads, and the essential finishing touches such as painting and lighting.
