After numerous delays, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has finally received the necessary permissions to extend the Palm Beach Road project up to the Airoli-Mulund creek bridge. The proposed 21.12 km road project from Belapur to Airoli Sector 10A was initially proposed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in 2004.

While CIDCO constructed 19.20 km of the road from Belapur to Ghansoli, work on the remaining two km was stalled. The revival of the Palm Beach Road project will bring great relief to commuters in the area and improve connectivity to various locations.

Extension of the project increases length and cost

According to a report in Hindustan Times, the revised plan will add 1.5 km to the length of the road and double the project cost from Rs 250 crore to Rs 425 crore. NMMC City Engineer Sanjay Desai said the remaining road construction will now be 3.47 km, including a two-km bridge over mangrove areas. The additional work has almost doubled the cost of the project. Desai added that NMMC is hoping to get CIDCO to cover half of the cost.

Necessary clearances received for the project

NMMC has received necessary clearances from Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority, Forest Department, Mangrove Conservation Committee, Environment and Environment-sensitive authorities for the project. The only permission pending is from the Bombay High Court. With the necessary approvals in place, work on the remaining two km of the project is set to begin soon.

Improved connectivity and smooth traffic flow in the area

The Ghansoli-Airoli Palm Beach Road project is crucial for the smooth running of traffic in the area. The road will also connect the Airoli-Mulund bridge and the under-construction Airoli-Katai route, which will allow motorists to travel to Kalyan, Badlapur, Ambernath, Murbad and other areas. Additionally, the road will help reach the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is set to boost connectivity and create new employment opportunities.
