After months of postponement, the demolition of Sion Road Over Bridge (ROB) is finally set to commence on March 28.

This marks a crucial step forward for the proposed 5th and 6th rail lines connecting Kurla to Parel.

The demolishment, which was scheduled for January, process faced delays due to deliberations surrounding its impact on local residents and motorists. However, after thorough discussions and resolution of pertinent issues, the Central Railway (CR) has greenlit the project.

According to a Central Railway (CR) official, demolition work will now commence after the end of the board exams — HSC on March 19 and SSC on March 26 — to ensure minimal disruption to students.

During the dismantling phase, the bridge will be closed for vehicular traffic. This phase sets the groundwork for the subsequent reconstruction. It will incur a cost of INR 50 crore.

For the unversed, Sion Bridge, which was built in 1912, serves as a crucial link connecting Dharavi, LBS Road, and the Eastern Express Highway. Its closure could lead to congestion on other east-west connectors.

Safety concerns were raised by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in its April 2020 audit report, which declared the Sion bridge unsafe due to deteriorating structural components.
