The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started construction on a new INR 2,682 crore elevated corridor from Chheda Nagar near Chembur to Anand Nagar in Thane. The project is an expansion of the Eastern Freeway and will bring a smooth, signal-free route between South Mumbai and Thane.

The corridor will begin near Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, where the current Eastern Freeway ends at Mankhurd, and will act as a direct extension. It will connect areas like Ramabai Nagar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, JVLR, Airoli, Mulund, and Ghatkopar before ending at Anand Nagar in Thane. The project will also link with another elevated route between Anand Nagar and Saket at the Mulund Octroi Naka.

The elevated corridor will be 13.90 km long and 25 metres wide. It will have six lanes, with three lanes on each side. Each span will measure about 40 metres. MMRDA has also planned two-lane entry and exit ramps for commuters heading south. These ramps will be built at three points: Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction, and Vikhroli Junction.

Currently, MMRDA has completed test piling and preliminary survey work. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has also issued notices for the removal of around 700 trees along the Eastern Express Highway, as the project will affect them. Utility identification and geotechnical investigation are in progress. Pier casting has already started, and about 5.38% of the total construction work is complete.

As per reports, the project is part of the “Mumbai in Minutes” initiative. Commuters will be able to cover the route in about 20 to 25 minutes. The total duration of the project is planned for four years. Construction work will take around 36 months, while 12 months are reserved for design work and environmental clearances.
