The Western Railways (WR) will soon be replacing all steel girders with concrete girders placed on culverts between Churchgate and Virar stations. It will be done to improve the safety of the commuters and also make the daily ride smooth. It is due to the steel girders that the train rides are full of jerks.

The maintenance of concrete girders is less as compared to the steel girders, said officials.

A Western Railway officer has said that most of the steel girders are around 50 years old, because of which they need extra care and maintenance. There are over a dozen of such culverts which exists in the Mumbai suburban section.

The precast concrete girders increase time efficiency. It also enhances construction safety, durability, reduced wastage, and neat working areas due to reduced clutter. These girders will also reduce the jerk of trains.

The officials have already started the tendering process for replacing steel girders of all the culverts and will be completed in phases.
