A large number of road and footpath works are going on in the city and suburbs and the contractors are not taking proper care of the trees while doing these works. Due to digging with the machine, the roots of the trees are being hit and the trees are getting weak. Therefore, the Parks Department has requested the Roads Department to take proper care of the trees while working on the roads and footpaths.

Tree resources are damaged due to careless road construction contractors. A few days ago, the work of beautifying a footpath near August Kranti Maidan in Nana Chowk area was started. At that time, the Gulmohar tree was uprooted due to the contractor's mistake. Although there was no loss of life in this accident, a complaint was registered on behalf of the division office at Gaondevi Police Station as it was contractor's fault.

As similar complaints are being made by tree lovers and aware citizens from various departments, the Parks Department has now sent a letter to the Roads Department requesting them to take care of the trees. If the roots of the trees become weak, they are likely to be uprooted during the rainy season. Also, in the letter sent to the Roads Department, the opinion has been expressed that it is necessary to maintain the balance of the environment while developing the infrastructure, as the importance of trees in terms of environment in Mumbai city is unique.

Proposals to cut trees should come during tender process

The letter also expressed displeasure that proposals for cutting or replanting trees encroaching on construction are being submitted after the actual work has started. The Tree Authority requires two months for the clearance process to remove trees encroaching on development work. Therefore, it has been expressed in this letter that the proposal to cut down the trees obstructing any work should come only during the tender process.
