In a significant development, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday, May 1, announced the commencement of Mumbai Coastal road by the end of this year, i.e, December 2023.

This development came after the CM conducted an inspection of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s ambitious project.

Besides, this statement comes after CC road works faced criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) and BJP leaders.

With new companies which bagged CC contracts failing to start work, the BMC imposed a penalty of INR 16 crore on three of the five companies.

The Coastal Road connects Marine Lines and Kandivali. The 29.2 km road will make Mumbai even faster in the future. This is a project of 150 billion. It is a great alternative to the Western Express Highway (WEH).

This route will start from Manora Hostel. The Coastal Road will be tunneled to Malabar Hill and resurfaced at Priyadarshini Park on Warden Road. After that, this coastal road will be connected to Worli Bandra Sea Link via Hajiali. Further coastal road will be elevated near Oshiwara. This coastal road will be elevated between Oshiwara and Malad. This route will end at Kandivali.

It is pertinent to note that earlier the BMC had set a deadline to open the coastal road on November 1. Later, two months ago, it was stated that the deadline for opening up Coastal Road to vehicular traffic was expected to be pushed by nearly seven months.

Additionally, Shinde again reiterated that Mumbai will become pothole-free in two years as cement concrete (CC) roads were being constructed. The state government have taken up 500 beautification works and 800-1000 more spots will be identified, the CM added.
