In a significant development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal announced that the first phase of the Mumbai coastal road is most likely to be thrown open for public use on November 1, 2023.

The first phase of the Mumbai coastal road project is a 10.5km-long stretch distance between Marine Drive to Worli in south Bombay.

As per reports, the total estimated cost of the project, being constructed by the BMC, is INR 12,721 crores. A total of 71 percent work is complete, a senior civic body official stated.

Besides, tunnel boring work is 91 per cent complete, reclamation - 93 per cent, retaining wall - 79 per cent, interchanges - 36 per cent and bridges are 32 per cent complete, official further added.

As per latest development, boring for the second tunnel of the twin-tunnel, is in the last stage and is expected to be over by March. The first tunnel is bored from Priyadrashini Park to Marine Drive. Tunnel boring machine (TBM) lowered from worksite near Priyadarshini Park in January 2021. In January 2022, the TBM emerges near Girgaum Chowpatty, finishing boring.

Meanwhile, the second tunnel is being bored from Marine Drive to Priyadarshini Park. Boring began from Girgaum Chowpatty worksite on March 2022 and is expected to be completed by March 2023. Currently, 164 meters is left to be bored, civic officials stated.

The coastal road is expected to cut travel time between Marine Lines in south Mumbai and Kandivali in north Mumbai by 70 per cent and fuel consumption by 34 percent as well as reducing noise and air pollution as per BMC. However, there no official update on the inaugural of the second phase of the Mumbai coastal road. 

For those unversed, the project began in October 2018. The total reclaimed area is 111 hectares.
