In a significant development, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that the proposed Versova-Virar Sea Link will be extended till Palghar.

The Authority plans to carry out a pre-feasibility study of the extended portion, as the sea link was initially proposed only till Virar. The MMRDA also plans to build an access-controlled sea link on this stretch to improve connectivity.

Official claimed that the sea link will serve as a ring road connector with the coastal road, Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea link and Virar Alibaug Corridor.

The authority is also planning to construct an access-controlled sea link on this stretch.

According to MMRDA officials, the proposed sea link will provide crucial connectivity and facilitate the signal-free movement of commuters.

The extended portion till Palghar will further improve connectivity and reduce travel time. It will also help to reduce congestion on Mumbai's roads, which is a significant problem for commuters.

The project cost of the Versova-Virar Sea Link has increased by INR 8,000 crore, with the revised cost now at INR 40,000 crore compared to the earlier estimated cost of INR 32,000 crore.

For those unversed, the Versova-Virar project was earlier with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) but was later transferred to the MMRDA.

Currently, the MSRDC is constructing the Bandra-Versova Sea Link, and it has already constructed the city's first sea-link, which connects Worli and Bandra and was opened to traffic in 2009.
