According to the latest reports, work on the under-construction Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was stalled by multiple people from 27 villages affected owing to the slated Greenfield airport. It has been reported that they gathered at the Old Targhar Chowk near the site.
Based on accounts, they did so in order to protest against the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) that they claim did not fulfil the promises it made when it acquired the land.
It has been reported that the protestors demand included that the airport is named after late D B Patil, PAP leader instead of late Bal Thackeray, Shiv Sena founder.
Narratives claim that on Monday, January 24, work was stalled for the entire day. Several reports have quoted Darshan Patil, president of the committee who elaborated on how a meeting was conducted on January 13 wherein the CIDCO was asked to realise a solution.
Patil, however, remarked that they did not attain a satisfactory response from CIDCO. Previously, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, the vice-chairman and managing director of CIDCO stated that the body has been following up with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in regards to the revaluation of building NOCs approved by them for the construction of buildings in the rehabilitation areas of the NMIA. After this revalidation, CIDCO accorded seven development permissions and gave 34 OCs in certain pockets.
