The Malabar Hill area witnessed some minor landslides leading to some damage to water pipelines in the southern part of Mumbai. The landslides were caused due to continuous rainfall on Thursday, civic officials said.

The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) said that a total of four water pipelines were damaged which led to disruptions in the water supply at areas like Tardeo, Sofia Lane, Cumballa Hill, Pedder Road, Carmichael Road, and Altmount Road. To make up for the short supply of water, the BMC reportedly accommodated 30 water tankers to the impacted regions.

On Sunday, BMC finished laying an alternative water pipeline through Doongerwadi near Hanging Gardens in south Mumbai. The civic authority managed to carry out this work in a "record time of three days". With the competition of this task, BMC has assured that the water supply will be restored to Altamont Road, Pedder Road, Kemps Corner and the other areas from Monday.

The civic body clarified that the landslide did not cause any casualties, which is certainly good news. However, the authorities added that it may take up to a week to restore the road traffic on NS Patkar Road.

Officials mentioned that the roads will be opened for vehicles heading towards the south in around two days and that the road that leads to the northern part of the city may take a while to be restored given that some debris including rocks and mud from the hill continue to fall into the area.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal visited the site and inspected the damage. It is said that the commissioner also instructed the officials to open one side of the road for traffic soon. In terms of other damage caused by the landslide, the authorities said that nearly 50 trees have either been broken or uprooted due to the landslide.

Further, access to the Tower of Silence, which is a cremation site for Zoroastrians in Malabar Hills, has also been damaged due to the landslide. An official added that one of the structures inside the religious site has also been damaged.

Earlier on Wednesday, the retaining wall alongside BG Kher Road that connects Hanging Garden to Kemps Corner also collapsed on Wednesday, The Indian Express reports.

It is said that the civic body has hired a consultant to assess the damage done to the hill as a consequence of the landslide. Heavy rains were predicted by the Met department earlier this week, though events like landslides can seldom be predicted.
