The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Monday, August 11, that work on the new cable-stayed Belasis flyover is moving faster than expected. The project is planned to be completed by December 31, 2025. The bridge will connect Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central station.
According to reports, the BMC has already cleared all structures that were obstructing the work. Soil testing, foundation work, and pier construction have been completed. Four girders for the eastern approach road have been built, and a total of 40 are planned.
All 12 main girders within railway limits have been launched successfully. Construction on the remaining pier for the western approach will start soon. By September 14, slab casting, deck sheet installation, and girder bracing are expected to be finished.
After that, work will begin on both approach roads. A total of 40 traffic and power supply blocks will be taken for these works.
The flyover is being built to replace the old Bellasis Bridge, which was demolished in June 2024 by the Railways. The bridge, built in 1893, was found to be structurally weak after a detailed inspection.
The new bridge will improve connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo. A cable-stayed design was chosen because the bridge is located above railway tracks. This design reduces piling and speeds up construction.
The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) has signed an agreement with the BMC and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to execute the project. Work within railway limits is being carried out by Western Railway, while the BMC is building the approach roads.
