In an extraordinary expedition spanning six years and covering a staggering 43,000 kilometers across 30 countries on five continents, French writer and environmental advocate David Ligouy, aged 54, has undertaken a monumental journey aboard his self-made solar and wind-powered trike, 'IBN Battuta.' His mission? To raise global awareness about the critical issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the ominous threat of nuclear weapons.

Unexpected Hurdle in Mumbai

Despite smoothly traversing regions including the Middle East, Central America, and North America, Ligouy's ambitious plans to continue his journey through Asia, which included routes through Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, and West Bengal, were unexpectedly halted upon his arrival in Mumbai. The city that never sleeps, with its vibrant atmosphere, proved to be a significant juncture in Ligouy's mission. In an exclusive interview with the Free Press Journal, Ligouy expressed his admiration for Mumbai's bustling and vibrant atmosphere. His visit included a remarkable act of goodwill as he donated blood at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). In his view, Mumbai is a place teeming with life, an organized chaos that continues to move forward without pause, fueled by enthusiasm and camaraderie.

Customs Conundrum Delays Eco-Crusader

Ligouy now faces an unexpected bureaucratic challenge—clearing his trike through Mumbai's Customs. Despite his smooth journey so far, he encountered unforeseen difficulties in this bustling metropolis. Determined to overcome this hurdle, the Frenchman remains steadfast in his mission to promote sustainable renewable energy technology in developing nations and reduce global CO2 emissions. Discussing the driving force behind his global tour, Ligouy passionately conveyed his commitment to combat terracide, a term encapsulating ecocide and genocide. He underscored the urgent imperative to curtail global CO2 emissions while championing the rapid deployment of zero and low emission vehicles, aligning with the 2030 climate change objectives.

Ligouy's Vision and Global Impact

Drawing attention to the issue of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, Ligouy pointed out that countries like China, the USA, and India annually allocate staggering sums for such subsidies. His argument centered on the necessity of redirecting these funds toward more efficient renewable energy sources. Furthermore, he stressed that the Global South urgently requires $5.7 trillion annually to advance clean energy initiatives. Ligouy commended India for its remarkable strides in harnessing solar power and transitioning public transport to green energy. He marveled at the widespread use of rooftop solar panels at CSMT and the increasing prevalence of electric public transport buses and vehicles on Indian roads.

About David Ligouy

David Ligouy is an electrical engineer qualified from the University of Stanford, England, and embarked on the construction of his trike in April 2018. He attributed his current Customs predicament to the misguided advice of a clearing agent who had him sign blank papers and recommended local brokers. Consequently, Ligouy is now grappling with additional charges and taxes, resulting from an extended delay caused by this misunderstanding.
