Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Ravindra Waikar, who was elected from the Mumbai North West constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, has been challenged in the High Court by his rival Uddhav Thackeray's Amol Kirtikar.
Through a petition, Kirtikar has demanded that Waikar's candidacy be cancelled and that he be declared the elected candidate from this constituency. On the day of counting of votes, a difference in votes was found, so an application was filed for recounting of votes. However, several serious errors were committed by the election officials appointed to conduct the counting process.
That as well as the violation of rules related to the counting process, the voting by 333 fake voters also affected the result. Kirtikar has also claimed in the petition that the election officer hastily counted the votes arbitrarily. Similarly, it has been demanded that during the hearing of the petition, an order should be given to produce the footage of the entire vote counting process in this constituency.
Kirtikar was defeated by 48 votes. Waikar got 4 lakh 52 thousand 644 votes, while Kirtikar got 4 lakh 52 thousand 596 votes. After much confusion, Waikar was declared the winning candidate. Interestingly, this is the second petition filed against Waikar.
