Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Thursday attacked senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut over his remarks on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stating that Raut should concentrate on “keeping Maharashtra entertained with poetry”.

Nirupam took to Twitter to express his displeasure with Raut’s remarks.

It would be better if Mr. Poet (Sanjay Raut) keeps entertaining Maharashtra with the poetries of others. If he tries to defame former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he will regret it. He should withdraw his comments about Indiraji immediately,” Nirupam tweeted.

On Wednesday, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had claimed that Indira Gandhi used to meet yesteryear don Karim Lala in Mumbai.

Raut, who was a journalist earlier, said that he has seen the underworld in Mumbai when gangsters like Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Shakeel and Sharad Shetty used to have control over the city.

This has caused embarrassment to Sena’s ally in the newly formed Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Raut was speaking at an award function of a media group.

From the 1960s to 1980s, Karim Lala used to operate extortion rackets and liquor dens along with gambling. Lala died in 2002.
