Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Narendra Mehta, former MLA from Mira-Bhayander assembly constituency, has resigned from the party claiming he was quitting politics.

In a video, BJP MLA Narendra Mehta announced that he is leaving the party and doesn’t intend to join any other party as he is quitting politics. He said that his deeds in the past had brought a "bad name" to the BJP.

“...this is why, I am resigning from all party posts. I am taking political sanyas (retirement) but will continue to do social work. Thanks to all those supported and followed me," said Mehta who had contested 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections from Mira-Bhayandar constituency.

This will be a setback for the BJP in Mira-Bhayandar region as Mehta’s resignation comes ahead of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Mayor election which was held on February 26. The BJP dominates the MBMC.

In 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, BJP candidate Narendra Mehta was defeated by independent candidate Geeta Jain. Since his defeat, Mehta has not been active in the party activities. Geeta Jain contested the assembly polls independently after she was expelled from the BJP over conflict with Narendra Mehta.

Meanwhile, four BJP corporators in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) left the party and joined Shiv Sena. This happened ahead of the NMMC polls scheduled in April this year.

Earlier, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar had demanded Mehta’s resignation over the issue of cutting the mangroves to construct a clubhouse.
