According to affidavits uploaded by the State Election Commission, several prominent candidates, including former Mayor Kishori Pednekar, have declared a significant increase in their assets since 2017 ahead of the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
A total of 1,700 candidates are in the fray for the 227-ward civic body polls, scheduled for January 15.
Former Mayor Kishori Pednekar's Asset Increase
Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate and former city mayor Kishori Pednekar, who is contesting from Lower Parel (Ward 199) in central Mumbai, has declared assets worth a total of Rs 5.26 crore, a 226 percent increase from Rs 1.61 crore in 2017. Pednekar, who served as Mumbai's mayor from 2019 to 2022, has declared immovable and movable assets worth Rs 4.69 crore and Rs 57 lakh respectively.
Shiv Sena's Samadhan Sarvankar Has Massive 394% Increase
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) candidate Samadhan Sarvankar, son of former MLA Sada Sarvankar and seeking a second term, has declared assets worth Rs 46.59 crore, a massive 394 percent increase from Rs 9.43 crore in 2017. According to the affidavit, the Sena candidate, who has listed his profession as business, possesses immovable assets worth Rs 40.59 crore, along with considerable movable assets. Yamini Jadhav owns assets worth Rs 14.57 crore.
Meanwhile, Former MLA Yamini Jadhav (Shiv Sena candidate from Ward 209 in the Mazgaon area), wife of former corporator and former BMC Standing Committee chairman Yashwant Jadhav, owns assets worth Rs 14.57 crore, including immovable assets worth Rs 11.28 crore and movable assets worth Rs 3.28 crore. In 2024, when she contested the Maharashtra Assembly elections, she declared total assets of Rs 10.10 crore, along with a loan of Rs 52 lakh from financial institutions.
Arun Gawli's daughter Geeta Gawli owns assets worth Rs 7.26 crore
Geeta Gawli, daughter of gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, who is contesting from the Byculla-Agripada area (Ward 212) and seeking a second term, has declared assets worth Rs 7.26 crore, including immovable assets worth Rs 4.70 crore, compared to Rs 3.38 crore during the 2019 Assembly elections.
Kirit Somaiya's son Neil Somaiya's assets increase by 400%
Former corporator and son of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, Neil Somaiya (35), has declared total assets of Rs 9.89 crore, a 400 percent increase compared to Rs 1.99 crore in 2017. According to the affidavit, his assets include movable and immovable assets worth Rs 5.72 crore and Rs 4.16 crore respectively.
Tejaswini Ghosalkar, who recently left Shiv Sena (UBT) to join the BJP and is contesting from Ward 2 in the Dahisar area, has declared assets worth Rs 5.15 crore, compared to Rs 25.82 lakh in 2017.
Congress candidate Sheetal Mhatre from Ward 1 of Dahisar has declared assets worth a total of Rs 4.27 crore, compared to Rs 17.29 lakh in the last municipal elections. She has declared immovable and movable assets worth Rs 1.22 crore and Rs 3.05 crore, respectively. The last date for filing nomination papers was December 30.
