State government recommends Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule for Bharat Ratna

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed that the state government has recommended names of Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule for the Bharat Ratna to the Centre. He announced the same while inaugurating the 3rd National Convention of Rashtriya OBC Mahasangh at NSCI on Tuesday.

Energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Maharashtra Congress President and Nanded MP Ashok Chavan and other MLAs were present for the convention.

Fadnavis also announced that the state would grant ₹500 Cr to the OBC corporation in the next two budgets in order to provide employment opportunities and assist the OBC youth.

He added that the state has set up a separate ministry for OBCs in Maharashtra. Along with this, the Centre is doing their best for the same.

The CM said that he is happy that after 70 years of struggle, Parliament has passed a bill that will provide constitutional status to national backward classes commission.




Jyotirao Govindrao Phule, later revered as Mahatma Phule, was born on April 11, 1827. When Jyotirao was 13, he was married to 9-year-old Savitribai, hailing from an aristocratic farming family. Born in a lower caste, Mahatma Phule was a thinker, social reformer, anti-caste activist and writer while his wife followed in his footsteps beside being an educationist and a poetess. She also worked against the practice of dowry.
