The controversy surrounding the use of Marathi in Mira-Bhayandar city of Thane district is escalating, with serious repercussions. A few days ago, local traders’ associations shut their shops in protest.

On July 8, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) planned a march to assert Marathi identity. However, police denied permission, citing concerns over law and order. Despite this, MNS leaders insisted on holding the march, leading to the detention of several party workers, including local leader Avinash Jadhav, creating tension in the city.

When asked by the media why the march was not allowed, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “I asked the Police Commissioner about it. Normally, if anyone seeks permission for a march, we grant it. But the Commissioner informed me that MNS leaders insisted on a specific route that could lead to conflict.”

Fadnavis added “The police had intel that certain individuals might cause trouble. They suggested an alternative, more traditional route. But MNS leaders rejected it and insisted on marching through the sensitive route. So, permission was denied.”
