During a session at the upper house of the state legislature, Deputy Chief Minister (DCM) Devendra Fadnavis announced that the report of the investigations conducted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the Trimbakeshwar incident would be made available within a month. The incident in question involved Muslim youths attempting to enter the Trimbakeshwar temple near Nashik during a Sandal procession, which resulted in an FIR being lodged against them by the temple trustees. The issue was raised during a calling attention motion by members of the house.
Conflicting Claims Surrounding the Tradition
The incident brought to light conflicting claims regarding the tradition of showing incense sticks at the Trimbakeshwar temple. While the youths argued that it was an age-old tradition, the temple trustees firmly denied its existence. Fadnavis mentioned that there was evidence of people entering the temple premises and taking selfies in 2022, but the temple trustees disputed any such tradition. Those involved in the incident have already offered their apologies.
Awaiting SIT Report
In response to queries raised during the session, Devendra Fadnavis revealed that the SIT report on the Trimbakeshwar incident was still pending. The individuals named in the FIR had been served notices under CrPC 41, and the investigation was ongoing. Despite the issue sparking tensions, Fadnavis assured the house that the situation was presently under control.
Respecting Freedom of Faith
During the discussion, Kapil Patil of Janta Dal (S) voiced his concerns regarding the denial of the tradition, arguing that it went against the freedom of faith enshrined in the constitution. In reply, Fadnavis clarified that the government does not impose faith or tradition on people, except when law and order are at stake. He stressed the significance of maintaining harmony and mutual respect within society, urging everyone to be mindful of actions that might hurt the sentiments of others.
SIT Report to Shed Light on Trimbakeshwar Incident
Fadnavis assured the house that the SIT report on the Trimbakeshwar incident would be available within a month. He acknowledged the presence of government officers among the temple trustees and stated that addressing their complaint was the government's duty. He urged the public to exercise patience as the legal process unfolded and the report's findings were revealed.
Derogatory Articles Prompt Action
In a separate motion presented by NCP's Amol Mitkari, Fadnavis addressed concerns about derogatory articles posted about Savitribai Phule on websites Indic Tales and Hindu Post by a Twitter handle named "bharadwajspeaks." He disclosed that notices had been issued to the websites, and efforts were underway to identify the main accused. The articles in question had already been removed, and investigations were ongoing.
