The opposition is up in arms over appointing the former BJP spokesperson as Bombay High Court’s judge. NCP (SP) legislator Rohit Pawar raised objections to the appointment of Aarti Sathe.

Meanwhile, Sathe, in her defence, said that she had resigned from the party. Maharashtra BJP pointed out that similar appointments happened in the Congress regime as well. In a social media post, Rohit Pawar said that the appointment of Sathe to the judiciary was “the gravest blow to democracy”.

“The appointment of a political figure raises doubts about the entire process of delivery of justice. It also undermines the principle of separation of power ensured by the Constitution,” he added.
He asked to reconsider the decision.

“Appointing a political spokesperson as a judge is nothing less than a betrayal of this constitutional principle, and by extension, an assault on the Constitution itself,” said the NCP (SP) leader. The BJP clarified that Sathe had resigned from the post on January 6 last year.

Sathe has primarily practised law in the area of direct and indirect taxation. She is an alumna of Government Law College, Mumbai. Her father, Arun P. Sathe, is a long-time BJP member with a strong RSS background. He previously served as the BJP in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh and was actively associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
