After the vandalism at Rajgruha - the residence of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the police to take strict action against those involved while terming the incident as “shocking”.

Thackeray said that his government will not tolerate the insult of Rajgruha. The act of vandalism at the residence of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar has sparked huge chaos among the followers and politicians in Maharashtra.

Matunga Police registered an FIR after unidentified men on Tuesday evening vandalised the flower pots at Rajgruha which is the residence and memorial of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in Dadar’s Hindu colony.

The Police, however, dismissed any political angle and said those behind it may be “drug addicts”. It was learnt that flower pots in the premises of ‘Rajgruha’ in Mumbai were smashed and some CCTV cameras were also damaged.

Reacting to the incident, Thackeray said that Rajgruha was not just a sacred place for Ambedkarites but the whole society. The Chief Minister said that the place has all writings of Ambedkar preserved and it was like a pilgrimage centre for all Maharashtrians.

“The police have been instructed to take strict action against the culprits. The government will not tolerate the insult of Rajgruha,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar also condemned the incident of vandalism and said that it was a misdeed of anti-social mentality. He asked the people to not fall prey to the evils of anti-social forces and has appealed for peace, restraint and unity.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashish Shelar visited Rajgruha to meet the grandsons of Babasaheb Ambedkar - Anandrao and Bhimrao (Dadasaheb).
