NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad has alleged a INR 2,800-crore Transferable Development Rights (TDR) scam involving a land parcel in Thane's Chitalsar-Manpada area adjoining the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, triggering fresh political controversy over the high-value transaction.
Raising questions over the handling of the case, Awhad claimed that several aspects of the deal require scrutiny and alleged that authorities failed to adequately address concerns raised by the Forest Department. He also questioned the circumstances under which the TDR proposal moved forward despite objections related to the environmentally sensitive land.
The dispute revolves around nearly 193 acres of land claimed by a private company, a significant portion of which has been reserved as a public park under the Thane Municipal Corporation's development plan. Following a settlement between the civic body and the company, the process for granting TDR worth an estimated INR 2,800 crore gained momentum.
The matter has been the subject of prolonged legal proceedings. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had temporarily stayed the TDR process after objections were raised regarding procedural and regulatory issues. Subsequently, the dispute was resolved through a settlement, clearing the way for the TDR transaction while retaining the reservation of the land for public use.
Awhad's allegations have renewed focus on the deal, with opposition leaders demanding transparency and a detailed explanation from the authorities involved. The controversy has also reignited concerns over the future of land located near the ecologically sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
As the issue gathers political attention, questions continue to be raised about the valuation of the TDR, the legal process followed, and the role of various government departments in facilitating the transaction.
