Will Shiv Sena's Arvind Sawant retain his position from Mumbai South constituency?

Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 polls in Mumbai, here's all you need to know about Shiv Sena’s candidate from the South Mumbai constituency

Will Shiv Sena's Arvind Sawant retain his position from Mumbai South constituency?

The South Mumbai Constituency has been dominated by Congress. Except once or twice, the seat has witnessed Congress in power. However, in 2014, Shiv Sena candidate Arvind Sawant had defeated Congress candidate Milind Deora to win the seat.

Political Career

In 1968, Sawant was appointed as a senior Shiv Sena leader and a year after that, he played a crucial role in the Seema Movement. After which, for 30 years, he served as the President of the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Kamgar Sangh.

Activity as an MP

Sawant has an impeccable 98 per cent attendance in the Parliament and along with that, he has also taken part in 279 discussions. He had also asked 463 questions throughout his tenure. From his ₹25 crore MLA fund, he has used ₹15 crore for welfare purposes and ₹3 crore has been allotted for ongoing work.

Close Aide to Uddhav and Balasaheb Thackeray

Along with being a successful leader, he was also close with late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and his son, Uddhav Thackeray. He also has served as the party spokesperson for several years.

This election is not going to be an easy win for Shiv Sena candidate Arvind Sawant who is contesting 2019 Lok Sabha polls against Congress’ Milind Deora from Mumbai South constituency.  Under the Modi wave, Sawant got elected as an MP from the same constituency. However, in public opinion, there is dissatisfaction among the voters against Sawant. With the ongoing construction of Coastal Road which is being opposed by many and the CSMT bridge collapse, Sawant will have to face the heat.
