On Wednesday, October 6, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition partners -- Shiv Sena, Congress, NCP – in Maharashtra announced a statewide bandh on October 11.

After a state Cabinet meeting, senior Cabinet Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state chief Jayant Patil made the announcement. He also stated that the Cabinet has decided to hold 'Maharashtra Bandh' to mark their protest against the central government over Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

The decision comes a day after the Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for a short meeting regarding the incident.

He further mentioned that in light of standing in solidarity with farmers, they are observing this bandh. All three parties and their allied partners will participate in the bandh, noted Patil adding that only essential services will operate on this day.

Patil tabled the resolution to pay tributes to the deceased farmers which was seconded by Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat (Congress) and Industries Minister Subhash Desai (Shiv Sena).

Earlier in the day, the state cabinet passed a resolution expressing regret over the death of farmers in the incident.

A statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) stated the ministers stood in silence as a mark of respect and described the deaths as unfortunate.

Cabinet ministers also observed two minutes of silence and paid tributes to the deceased farmers.

A total of eight people including four farmers died in violence in the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh that took place on October 3.

Following Raut’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi, he said that a unified opposition is necessary for the country.
