Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, July 14, revoked the pension and citation scheme for those imprisoned during the 1975 Emergency.

This move comes after a state Cabinet meeting held and led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Fadnavis said that pension for those who faced harassment during the Emergency period would also be resumed again a move that was brought about by the BJP government in 2019 and stopped by the MVA government in 2020.

While announcing this decision, Fadnavis also took a jab the former Uddhav Thackeray-led government and said: “All those people who went to jail during the 1975 Emergency to be given a pension by the Maharashtra government. This decision was taken in 2018 but the last government shut it down.”

He added that there are 3,600 such pension holders and 800 applications are pending.

Fadnavis exclaimed that the pension was an honour more than money for those who served jail term during the Emergency. While many people refused the pension, some are still poor who lost jobs after being arrested for no fault of theirs.

Additionally, in the same press conference, Fadnavis also noted that the state government has also given clearances to the Mumbai-Ahemdabad bullet train.

Earlier, in the day, the newly formed Eknath Shinde-led government decided to reduce the value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel by INR 5 and INR 3 per litre respectively.

Soon after taking charge, Fadnavis had announced that VAT on fuel will be reduced, similar to other BJP-ruled states.

Moreover, the former Shiv Sena minister, who is now the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, has reversed Uddhav Thackeray’s decision to make a metro car shed at Kanjurmarg. Now, the BJP government has again proposed to shift it to Aarey.
