Maharashtra housing minister Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday, December 22, told the legislative council that a housing scheme wherein rental flats built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) were to be handed over to the mill workers, have been scrapped, mentioned reports.

Responding to a question made by Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap in the question hour, Awhad remarked that the scheme was to amalgamate 160 sq ft rental flats and hand them over to the mill workers. Awhad was quoted by narratives elaborating on how this idea was in 2016 during which they were to get 320 sq feet flats that were to be equipped with two toilets.

This according to him, didn’t make sense. He added that the workers had even given INR 6 lakh for it to the MMRDA. However, the flats haven’t been given to the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) for disbursement.

In light of this, he believes that it is best to return the money to the mill workers. He further elucidated that the MHADA has been giving flats to the mill workers whenever they get available. Along with this, they are also given to workers on a priority basis who had paid the money.

During the 2014-19 term, the Housing Department was with the BJP for which houses for mill workers were built by the MMRDA. Then the body decided to give these houses to the mill workers. According to Awhad, MHADA never attained payments by the mill workers to the body.
