With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15, the authorities have stepped up preparations for the upcoming polls. Election officials have begun intensive groundwork and are being briefed on their responsibilities to ensure a smooth and transparent polling process.
A total of 10,231 polling stations have been set up across the city, spread over 24 administrative ward offices, including 23 central polling centers. Of the total, 4,386 polling stations will function from government and semi-government buildings. Among these, 2,387 are located in enclosed structures, 880 in semi-open spaces, and 1,119 in open spaces.
Moreover, to boost voter turnout, 702 polling stations will be located in housing societies. Of these, 181 polling stations will be in enclosed spaces, 312 in semi-enclosed spaces, and 209 in open spaces.
The remaining 5,143 will operate from private buildings across the city. This includes 2,710 in enclosed spaces, 1,378 in semi-enclosed areas, and 1,055 in open locations.
A total of 1,03,44,315 voters are eligible to exercise their right to vote in this election, officials said.
Additionally, special arrangements have been made for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and women voters. All polling stations will be equipped with essential facilities such as electricity, drinking water, toilets, and ramps to ensure accessibility.
BMC Commissioner and District Election Officer Bhushan Gagrani said that polling stations have been carefully planned based on ward-wise population, voter numbers, and geographical considerations to ensure easy access for voters. In line with the State Election Commission’s rules and guidelines, the municipal body has published the final ward-wise list of polling stations for all 227 wards.
“Our objective is to maintain complete transparency and provide voters with a safe, convenient, and hassle-free voting experience,” Gagrani said. He urged citizens to verify their designated polling stations in advance to avoid confusion on polling day.
Returning Officers have inspected and verified the availability of these facilities, the municipal body confirmed.
Election officials stated that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure orderly conduct of polling and maximum voter participation in the upcoming civic elections.
