In a first-of-its-kind move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started live streaming its general body meetings, allowing citizens to directly watch how corporators raise and discuss key civic issues.
The proceedings are now being broadcast on the official YouTube channel MyBMCMyMumbai, with the initiative going live from Monday. The move is aimed at increasing transparency and public engagement in civic governance.
The decision had been under consideration for some time but gained momentum following a recent controversy during a general body meeting. The dispute reportedly involved remarks made by Opposition Leader Kishori Pednekar while responding to a point of order raised by former Mayor Vishakha Raut.
Raut had raised concerns over the lack of proper protocol to maintain the dignity of the Mayor at public events. In response, Pednekar reportedly referred to an event involving renowned singer Asha Bhosle, where seating arrangements had sparked discussion.
Mayor Ritu Tawde, while announcing the initiative, said that live streaming would enhance transparency and enable citizens to closely follow the functioning of their elected representatives.
The move also follows a demand raised by Amrin Shehzad Abrahani, who had written to the Mayor and released a video urging the civic body to make its meetings accessible to the public in real time.
