Muslim leaders and organisations have urged the Maharashtra government to include representatives from the Muslim and Christian communities in the committee constituted to draft the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), arguing that the panel should reflect the diversity of all communities affected by the legislation.
In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, former Congress MP Hussain Dalwai and Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh said the UCC is a sensitive issue that concerns every section of society and should be framed only after extensive consultations with representatives of all religious communities and social organisations.
The leaders expressed concern that the seven-member committee currently lacks representation from the Muslim and Christian communities, calling the composition inconsistent with the principles of inclusivity and participatory democracy. They urged the state government to reconsider the panel's composition and appoint experts and representatives from both communities before proceeding with the drafting process.
Separately, a delegation of the Maharashtra Muslim Federation met State Joint Chief Electoral Officer Manohar Parkar on Friday, seeking a two-month extension for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The delegation cited heavy rainfall, the sowing season and migration as factors making it difficult for many citizens to complete the verification process.
The delegation also requested that details of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), including their contact numbers and office locations, be made easily accessible to the public. It further called for relaxation of documentation requirements, expansion of the list of acceptable identity documents, recognition of legally changed names, and measures to ensure that no eligible voter is deprived of voting rights due to procedural or technical issues.
