While keeping in mind the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the extension of free ration scheme for the poor till November 2020. The extension of the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana will cost around ₹90 thousand crores.

Talking about the economic package announced earlier by the central government, PM Modi said that a package of ₹1.75 lakh crores was announced under PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana. Furthermore, he said that nearly ₹31,000 crore has been deposited in the bank accounts (Jan Dhan accounts) of almost 20 crore families in the last three months.

Modi said that the extension of the free ration scheme for the poor will provide help to almost 80 crore people who would be able to avail 5 kg of free grains. Talking about the farmers, the Prime Minister said that nearly ₹18,000 crore has been deposited in bank accounts of more than nine crore farmers across the country.

India went under a nationwide lockdown on March 25 and will enter the sixth phase of the same tomorrow. However, the central government says the unlocking process has already started from the month of June given the resumption of economic activities.

“People have stopped being cautious of the coronavirus threat. This has been seen under Unlock 1. However, the need to remain cautious is required even more,” he said.

Modi further said that as India heads towards Unlock 2.0, the citizens should take care of themselves. “This is the season of cough, fever and cold which requires cautiousness,” he added.

The local administrations are expected to work with strictness to ensure that the negligence is eliminated in the fight against COVID-19, Modi stated.

The number of coronavirus cases in India has reached 5,67,536 and the death toll has touched 16,904. Maharashtra has already announced the lockdown extension till July 31 midnight.
