Today, self-styled spiritual leader Bhaiyyuji Maharaj allegedly shot himself in Indore. He was then admitted to Bombay Hospital in Indore where he succumbed to his injuries. Later, police in Indore confirmed that Bhayyuji Maharaj committed suicide.


Who was Bhaiyyuji Maharaj?

Bhayyuji, originally Udaysinh Deshmukh, was the founder of institutions like Shri Sadguru Datta Dharmik Evam Parmarthik Trust and Suryodaya Ashram.

He had a strong following in Maharashtra and had announced a retirement from public life in April 2016. This year in April, he was accorded the minister of state status in the Madhya Pradesh government.

In 2011, he attracted national attention when Anna Hazare was on indefinite hunger strike for Lokpal bill. When Anna was not ready to discuss it with the Union government, late Vilasrao Deshmukh brought Bhayyuji to discuss it with Anna. He coordinated with the then law minister Salman Khurshid and Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit and prepared a draft of Lokpal bill, which was acceptable to both the parties.


Suicide Note

Bhaiyyuji Maharaj left a suicide note in which he mentioned that he was going through some family issues. And he also mentioned that no one should be held responsible for his death.

49-year-old Bhaiyyuji Maharaj married for the second time in April 2017. Maharaj’s first wife Madhavi passed away in November 2015 and he is survived by his son Kuhu, who is completing his studies in Pune and his second wife Dr Aayushi from Gwalior.
