The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has extended the deadlines for obtaining competency certificates for new and existing real estate agents. The deadline for new agents is now November 1, 2023, while for existing licensed agents it is January 1, 2024.

According to MahaRERA, only those real estate agents who hold a valid MahaRERA Real Estate Agent Certificate of Competency can apply for registration or renewal.

MahaRERA has urged all 40,000 already registered agents to acquire their competency certificate by January 1, 2024. Agents are required to post these certificates on their individual pages on the MahaRERA website.

Earlier, MahaRERA had set the deadline for September 1 for all the agents, but only 3500 real estate brokers out of the total 40,000 appeared for the two exams conducted by the organization.

In a circular issued on January 10, 2023, MahaRERA highlighted the role of real estate agents as mediators between home buyers and promoters. The circular stressed that agents must have a full understanding of real estate transactions to guide buyers effectively and prevent misunderstandings.

It also pointed out that formal training and certification programs would enhance understanding of regulatory and legal frameworks. With certified real estate brokers, home buyers can receive professional assistance, enabling them to make informed decisions in the market. To facilitate this, MahaRERA developed a curriculum and modules, hired four training facilities to deliver at least 20 hours of instruction on RERA's legal framework, and conducted online assessments.
