Eminent Hematologist Dr Suraj Chiraniya at Mumbai-based Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital has recently marked the completion of 50 Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) procedures. The spectrum of BMTs performed here ranges from half-matched to unrelated transplants.

The hospital deployed advanced management techniques tailored to the individual needs of the patients at its infrastructural-wise state-of-the-art BMT unit.

Commenting on the successful treatment of 50 patients Dr Suraj Chiraniya, Hematologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Physician who spearheaded the successful BMT procedures at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital shared: “The BMT unit established in November 2019 at the hospital is one of the most hi-tech and patient-friendly in the city. The patients who have undergone the treatment here are in the age group of 15 to 70 years. These patients were diagnosed with a variety of hematological diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, Thalassemia, and Myelodysplastic syndromes, among others."

A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is a treatment for curing blood cancer. It is a procedure that infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into your body to replace bone marrow that's not producing enough healthy blood cells. A bone marrow transplant is also called a ‘Stem Cell Transplant’. One might need a bone marrow transplant if his/her bone marrow stops working and does not produce enough healthy blood cells. Bone marrow transplants may use cells from your own body (Autologous Transplant) or a donor (Allogeneic Transplant).

While further elaborating on the BMT Dr Suraj Chiraniya exclaimed: "As of now BMT is the only way to cure blood cancer. However, lack of awareness among people about treatment options, lack of timely diagnosis, limited access, and affordability are some of the hurdles causing the limited number of BMT treatments taking place in India (Presently only 10% of patients suffering go for BMT treatment). As BMT treatment requires not only the expertise of highly qualified and trained BMT Physician but also state-of-the-art infrastructure adhering to guidelines of National Guidelines for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation issued by ICMR, the Ministry of Health & Family very few hospitals venture to set up such dedicated BMT units. I believe a lot needs to be done at Government as well as Private institutions level to bridge this gap and address the issue."

Speaking about treatment and success rate Dr Manish Gupta, Medical Director at Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital said: “The dedicated team of hematologists, oncologists, and transplant specialists at the hospital employs state-of-the-art infrastructure, techniques, and personalized care protocols, contributing to the high success rate of about 85%.The success of these transplants has not only saved lives but also improved the quality of life for the majority of patients, many of whom had exhausted other treatment options. The successful outcomes are a testament to our rigorous patient selection process, exceptional medical expertise, and the resilient spirit of our patients. Building on this success the management of Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital is committed to further research and development in this area. Our goal is to continue improving the efficacy and safety of bone marrow transplants and to make these life-saving procedures accessible to even more patients in need around the globe."
