Nifty and Sensex settled in the negative territory after a highly volatile trading session.
At close, the Sensex was down 164.11 points or 0.31 per cent at 52,318.60 and the Nifty was down 41.50 points or 0.26 per cent at 15,680.
About 1632 shares have advanced, 1516 shares declined and 118 shares remain unchanged.
On the Nifty 50 index, Dr. Reddys Labs (2.50 per cent), Hindalco (1.98 per cent), Bajaj Auto (1.71 per cent), Tata Motors (1.37 per cent) and Sun Pharma (1.29 per cent) were the top gainers for the day, while Bajaj Finserv (-2.42 per cent), Gland (-1.67 per cent), Shree Cement (-1.62 per cent), Britannia (-1.48 per cent) and Infosys (-1.29 per cent) were the top losers for the day.
On the sectoral front, Auto, FMCG, Pharma and PSU Bank eneded in green, while Energy, Bank, Metal, Infra & IT ended in red.
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended almost flat.
Author’s View: The technical indicators suggest a volatile movement in the market in the range of 15,650 – 15,900. Traders should refrain from building fresh positions until a decisive move is seen in the market.
